Inspired by titles from the publisher Gallimard and other historical examples from twentieth-century Parisian presses, we created a series of books to present new translations of works by some of the leading French Symbolist poets. The design goal was to create four books, one for each poet, that clearly hold together as a series. It was also our edict to create a more contemporary look and feel for the volumes to introduce these beloved writers to new readers and allow their devotées to see them in a fresh light. These two aesthetic challenges paired nicely together, as the palette and motif we developed could be both vibrant and executed across all the titles, as well as in related ephemera. We were also able to play with some of the poets’ own original typesetting and sketches, which feature within the books’ interior pages to add visual intrigue and colorful enticement throughout—quel plaisir!
